From Linda at Estella....
Well, normally I am too lazy to write and even to tired to read what Mike has written, but alas I did read what he just wrote and my first response was ' why are you a doctor and I'm a nurse?' What's up with that nonsense?
It's been quite a start to the Camino. I really thought I was in good shape but I will tell you that we are covering rough terrain and so the walking can be slow and difficult. And then with all sorts of maladies, the going gets quite tough. Hey, even old ladies on crutches are passing me. I don't think that Dewey and MJ were very forthcoming on Camino Conditions. I've decided that in the same way that no one share the darker side to chilbearing, likewise no one shares the real pain of the Camino!
Enough on that. The towns we've passed through have been so lovely; window boxes with geraniums and other flowers, so clean, with such great architecture. The hills are alive with the lavender of thistle, red poppies, and bright yellow mustard.....and today with the sound of music from a Korean/French guy who walked with me for awhile and sang what he knew of 'If You're Going To San Francisci be sure to wear some flowers in your hair.' That's what he knew, but it was a nice gesture.
The kindness of people has been something. When we stopped in Lorca today for a coke and sandwich, I asked the guy if he had a restroom where I could wash my hand from my earlier fall (which had some depth on it as Enrica from Ausrralia told me). He got out a first aid kit and cleaned and disinfected my hand and arm and then bandaged me all up. Pretty darn nice.
Tomorrow will be another good day if I can stay away from thos Italian guys who were chasing me!
I think the pure joy of finishing the Camino fogged my memory of the pain... that and a heck of a lot of wine! The first week is hardest. Once your blisters harden over, your legs go completely numb, and you slip into one of those zombie states, it will become a walk in the park... I hope!
